The Macchiaioli movement was a school of 19th century Tuscan painters originating in the 1850s, looking beyond the traditional and strict rule-bound teaching of the Italian academies of art, towards the reactions of natural light, shade, and colour. The Macchiaioli movement was the forerunners of the impressionist movement, which developed in Europe (especially France) from the 1860s.
