William Callow was a painter of landscapes, buildings and sea pieces, mainly in watercolour but some in oil - the Victorian heir of the picturesque topographical school epitomised by Prout. Articled at the age of 11 to Theodore and Thales Fielding. He went to Paris in 1829, where he worked under Newton Fielding, and later established himself there as a teacher. Thomas Shotter Boys at the Salon, much influenced his style. In 1831 he exhibited 'View of Richmond' at the Salon, and as a result was appointed drawing master to the family of Louis Philippe. From 1838 to 1840 he toured Europe making sketches. He left Paris in 1841 for London, and in 1838 was elected A of the OWS, member in 1848, and secretary 1866-70. He exhibited there about 1,400 works. In 1848 he took to oil painting. In 1855 he left London and settled in Great Missenden where he died. His work became somewhat mannered and after a time ceased to attract. About two years before his death he turned out his portfolios of early works and these sold so well that he held an exhibition of them at the Leicester Galleries in 1907. His studio sale was held at Christie's on the 21st March 1910.
