Frank Moss Bennett

(1874 Liverpool, England - 1953 London, England)

Born in 1874, Frank Moss Bennett was a portrait painter, decorator and designer of costume figures. He studied at St. John’s Wood Art School, the Slade School and the Royal Academy Schools. In 1900, Bennett won the Gold Medal for students at the Royal Academy and was awarded a scholarship and a year’s study in Italy. The successful painting was titled Ladas and many thousands of reproductions were sold. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1898 and 1928, as well as the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-colour, and the Paris Salon. Bennett was himself his harshest critic and he painted continuously from his studio in London until 1939. He then moved to a farm in Devonshire. He travelled extensively on holiday, painting until his death in 1953. Bennett was best known for his Elizabethan subjects, many of which became well known through calendars and other forms of popular reproduction.
