Andries Beeckman
Little is known about the painter and draughtsman Andries Beeckman. The only reliable information is that he was in Batavia in 1657. This appears from a document dated 3 January of that year, which states that he was in debt and would be sailing back to the Republic as a soldier on the 'Arnhem'. The 'Castle of Batavia' is his only known painting still in existence. There is also a drawing, a profile of the Cape of Good Hope with the Dutch fort by Beeckman. This must have been made on a voyage to or from the East Indies.
