Peter Fendi
(1796 Vienna, Austria - 1842 Vienna, Austria)
Viennese Painter of the Biedermeier. A sense of peace and harmony pervades the works of this artist, who is generally classified as a genre painter. Fendi was no revolutionary, to be sure, and his works were never conceived as a rebellion against the idyll that his generation affected. His choice of theme was moderate, and his use of color calls to mind the pastose compositions of the Baroque era rather than the colorful exuberance of naturalism. Yet some facets of his art come as a surprise the special quality of his water-colors, for instance, whose picturesque charm lies in their highly individual use of color. Moreover, he was a veritable pioneer in the field of chromolithography, a technique which was still in its early stages. A popular children's portraitist, Fendi is also reputed to have produced some rather crude erotic water-colors which, however, have only survived in the form of graphic prints.
