Julius Victor Berger

Son of Ignaz Berger, a painter who specialised in saints; entered Vienna Academy at 14, studied first at the preparatory school and then in Engerth¹s Special School. In 1874 he was awarded the Imperial Travelling Scholarship, which enabled him to spend some time in Rome. In 1881 he became professor for Decorative Painting at the Arts and Crafts School, and in 1887 professor of General Painting at the Vienna Academy. He was a close friend of Hans Makart. Berger also painted genre scenes and portraits.
