The nineteenth-century Austrian artist Emil Czech specialized in paintings of the human figure. His two paintings of male nudes in the present auction are known as "academies," owing to their careful description of anatomy which was the foundation of classical art training in 19th-century art schools. Czech was born in Oberlangendorf, Moravia, but was active for most of his life in Vienna. He also produced genre scenes (often of beautifully-clothed women stolling outdoors), still lifes, and Viennese street scenes.
